Tu B´Shvat

4 new years

Hebrew Date

In the Jewish calendar wedon't use numbers for the dates, but letters.

This way, January 1st becomes "January A", and so on.

Tu Bishvat is a combination of two letters (tet and vav) to create the number15 for the 15th of the month of Shvat.

Tu B’Shvat is an ancient holiday. Its original purpose was to calculate the age of the trees for tithing. Leviticus 19:23-25 states that nofruit may be taken from a tree during its first three years of life. Fruit from the fourth year was given to God as a burnt offering, and in the fifth year the fruit could be eaten.Trees aged one year on Tu B’Shvat, so in many ways Tu B’Shvat is the birthday of the trees.

How we celebrate?

Many Jews celebrate Tu B’Shvat by donating money toorganisations that plants trees in Israel, or planting trees by themselves. It is also popular to commemorate Tu B’Shvat by eating 7 specific foods praised in the Torah: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates.

A short blessing is recited after eating any fruit. A special, longer blessing is recited for the fruits mentioned in the Torah.Jews also try to eat a new fruit, which can be any seasonal fruit that they have not tasted this year, followed by another blessing.

Some Jews make a special seder(ceremonial meal) on Tu B’Shvat that is similar to the one celebrated in Passover. This tradition began with Jewish mystics (Kabbalah) around 1600 and is becoming more popular every year.
