Mother Teresa was born in Skopje, Macedonia, on August 26, 1910. Her family was of Albanian descent. she received her First Communion at the age of five and a half and was confirmed in November1916. From the day of her First Holy Communion, a love for souls was within her. Gonxha’s religious formation was further assisted by the vibrant Jesuit parish of the Sacred Heart in which she was muchinvolved.
At the age of twelve, she felt strongly the call of God. She knew she had to be a missionary to spread the love of Christ. At the age of eighteen she left her parental home in Skopje andjoined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India. From 1931 to 1948 Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta, but the suffering and poverty sheglimpsed outside the convent walls made such a deep impression on her that in 1948 she received permission from her superiors to leave the convent school and devote herself to working among the poorest ofthe poor in the slums of Calcutta. Although she had no funds, she depended on Divine Providence, and started an open-air school for slum children. Soon she was joined by voluntary helpers, and financialsupport was also forthcoming. This made it possible for her to extend the scope of her work.
On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa received permission from the Holy See to start her own order, "TheMissionaries of Charity", whose primary task was to love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after.
Mother Teresa's work has been recognised and acclaimed throughout the world and shehas received a number of awards and distinctions, including the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971) and the Nehru Prize for her promotion of international peace and understanding (1972). She alsoreceived the Balzan Prize (1979) and the Templeton and Magsaysay awards.
