1. To give participants a bird’s eye view of the history of L2 motivation, its features,and recent trends.
2. To let participants review on motivation in L2 learning as language teachers.
3. To let participants think, if they were to research on L2 motivation, what would be aninteresting topic.

[Presentation]
Firstly, there was slides presentation on the topic.As it was the first presentation given by the “motivation group”, it was a broad and introductory review of L2 motivation describing its research history.

Because of the amount to be covered,this was to present L2 motivation research from the 1960s when it was examined within the social psychological framework, and also in the 1980s to 1990s when it was done so in cognitive psychologicalframework. The educational shift that occurred in 1990s is to be covered in the following Research Circle.

The main idea that was presented within the social psychological framework was the dichotomyof instrumental motivation and integrative motivation, which is still influential.

In the cognitive psychology framework, four theories were introduced, namely self-determination theory,attribution theory, goal theory, and Schumann’s theory based on neurobiological analysis.
