1. Ask around- to ask many people the same question. Example: I asked around to see what the most common opinion was.
2. Add up to (something) – equal, the sum of. Example: Your purchases add up to $129.00.
3. Blow up- to explode. Example: When the plane crashed, it blew up.
4. Break down- to stop functioning (vehicle, machine). Example: the vehicle broke downon the middle of the road.
5. Break down- to get upset. Example: She was so stressed, she broke down.
6. Break in- force entry to. Example: Somebody broke into the bank last night and took all the money.
7. Break into (something) – enter forcibly. Example: The firemen had to break into the building to stop the fire.
8. Break up- to end a relationship. Example: I broke up with myboyfriend.
9. Break out- to escape. Example: Stacy broke out of her house because she had a crisis.
10. Call around- phone many different places/people. Example: I was calling around, but no one was available.
11. Call someone back- to return a phone call. Example: I called Karla back to know what was so important.
12. Call something off- to cancel. Example: I had to call of thedate because my parents invited me over for dinner.
13. Call someone up- to phone someone. Example: He gave me his phone number to call him up when I’m in town.
14. Calm down- to relax. Example: I had to calm down after such a difficult night.
15. Catch up- to get to the same point as someone else. Example: I caught up to my mom after 15 minutes of walking.
16. Check in- to sign in orregister. Example: I checked in to the airport on time.
17. Check out- to sign out, to leave. Example: I checked out of the hotel at 5’o clock in the morning.
18. Check something/someone out- to look at carefully, investigate. Example: the company checks out all the new employees.
19. Check out (informal) - to look at, stare. Example: that guy was checking me out.
20. Cheer up- toget happier. Example: She cheered up as soon as she saw him
21. Chip in- to help. Example: If everybody chips in, we can finish by noon.
22. Clean up- to tidy, fix, clean. Example: Let’s clean up the room please!
23. Come across- to find unexpectedly. Example: I came across my old bicycle last night.
24. Come apart-separate. Example: The top and bottom come apart if you pull hardenough.
25. Do someone/something over- to beat up, ransack. Example: He's lucky to be alive, his shop was done over by a street gang.
26. Do away with something- to discard. Example: It's time to do away with all of these old tax records.
27. Dress up- wear nice clothing. Example: It's a fancy restaurant so we have to dress up.
28. Drop back- move back on a position. Example:Andrea dropped back to third place when she fell off her bike.
29. Drop in/by/over- come without an appointment. Example: I might drop in/by/over for tea sometime this week.
30. Drop out- quit class, school, etc. Example: I’m going to drop out of school so that I can start working
31. Eat out- to eat at a restaurant. Example: I don't feel like cooking tonight. Let's eat out!
32. End up-eventually reach/do/decide. Example: We ended up renting a movie instead of going to the theatre.
33. Fall apart- break into pieces. Example: My new dress fell apart in the washing machine.
34. Fall down- fall to the ground. Example: The picture that you hung up last night fell down this morning.
35. Fall out- separate from an interior. Example: The money must have fallen out of mypocket.
36. Figure something out- understand, find the answer. Example: I need to figure out how to fit the piano and the bookshelf in this room.
37. Fill something in- to write information in blanks. Example: Please fill in the form with your name, address, and phone number.
