The glacial origin of the Kettle Mucubají is evident because of the visible footprint left by the Mucubají ravine tens of thousands of years ago. This ravine was created by the actionof a receding glacier, which was also sealed by an accumulation of unconsolidated glacial debris (moraine) created by the lake. This moraine changed the course of the ravine from Rio Chama to RioOrinoco and to the Atlantic Ocean.
[edit]Fauna and vegetation

The ecosystem around the kettle is a characteristic of the páramo ecosystem that can only be found mostly in the upper parts of thenorthern Andes. The vegetation around the lake is primarily made up of espeletia (very common in the zone) and some artificially planted pines. The kettle is home to a wide population of trout that werebrought from Europe and North America in 1937. As a result, a lot of tourists are attracted during the fishing season (October 16th- September 30th).

Located sixtykilometers from the city of Merida, the Kettle Mucubají has a car access route that takes you directly to the kettle where you can park just a few meters from the kettle. In the zone, there are severalplaces where you can find guide services, travel guides and maps if you desire excursions. Once you arrive, there are several options to explore the zone and visit other beautiful kettles such LagunaNegra.
Laguna Negra is also famous because it is just about one and a half hour walk from Kettle Mucubají and it requires minimal physical preparation. One can also travel by horse in only 40 minutes.Tourists do this very often because one can appreciate the beautiful landscapes in this glacial valley.
