Her Kind by Anne Sexton
“Her Kind” was written by Anne Sexton who was an important poet into the gener of confessional poems. This poem the author describes three different common women, a witch, a housewife and a heroin. This poem describes these three women in a way that you could feel that you also have the similarcharacteristics. As a reader you will have the opportunity to open your mind to introduce you these three woman’s who lives in her mind. In sum,. this poem present the diversity of roles that the women had to assume to get a place on the society and how this affect on the way that recognize you as one of “ Her Kind”.
The structural analyses of poem you can recognize as a speaker is Anne Sexton.Also, the poem had a strong tone of sadness, regret and unsecure about herself because in each stanza when the author is describing the personalities of these women, she also is identified with her situation. The general’s subject in this poem could be the female oppression, sadness of a misunderstood live, or her loss of mental stability. At the same time this poem describes the deeper feelingof the author. In term of the construction of the stanzas this poem has three stanzas with seven lines each with end rhymes. This poem also has a parallel structure with clear rhyme scheme and stanza order.[?]
The first stanza, the figure is obviously a witch or someone his beliefs that go against the society and the difficulties of being “out of the ordinary”[?]. In the first versepresent a comparison of a witch’s life to describe the feeling of rareness, seclusion and the need to hide one’s true self from those live the normal live. This first woman has a in satisfaction with the monotony in her life, Sexton explain “Dreaming evil , I have done my hitch/ Over the plain houses, light by light: lonely thing… ( 3,4) The author is representing the unconformity around his lifebecause she is expressing his loneliness. Describing also the life of how one is different and such a perceived as supernatural when she mentioned….” Lonely thing, twelve-fingered, out of mind…… This first description create the personality of a woman is out of the ordinary and refuting the established things, laws, forms and also religious because a witch could represent de dark sideshowing the ambivalence between good and evil. For example using the words such as “possessed”, “haunting” and “out of mind” in the first stanza is because the speaker has been taken over by her mental state.
The second stanza, describes the woman who takes her place in a home representing the total and absolute submission. At the same time is misunderstood and is tired of been a housewife withall the duties. The line most shocking is …..” fixed the suppers for the worms and the elves”… .( 2,4) because such that usually it is mothers who cook at home for their children and do it with love, therefore, this lines shows a negative maternal figure who treats her children as inferior beings. Turn this expression allows us to perceive a lack of self steem because she recognizes has been oneof those.
In third stanza, is an allusion to Joan of Arc who was burned at the stake for trying to be more than what society deemed a woman should be. [?]Also, represent a woman who is feisty, enterprising and determined, no afraid of anything or anyone. In turn, this verse can be seen as a desire to commit suicide and that his death could be. In general, this poem describesthe deeper feeling of the writer. It takes us in a trip to her personality describing herself. This woman maybe only live in her mind or at the same time could be any common woman as a witch, as a misunderstood woman, an as a heroin.
