Internet start-up companies face a series of challenges that bricks-and-mortar companies do not face.
To begin with, there is the trust problem felt by the customers. The client is more comfortableknowing that there is a physical place where a brick-and-mortar company is set. It gives them a sense of trust in the company. That it will not simply be able to disappear from one moment to theother. However, that does not happen with an Internet based company. The customer’s perception when browsing a website is that this company can vanish from one moment to the other, and there will be noway to track this company in order to recover their money, for example.
Another challenge that Internet start-up companies face is the limitless geography that comes with the Internet world. This meansthat an Internet based company faces competition from all over the world, whereas a brick-and-mortar company will probably face only the local/national competition.
Moreover, due to this wideexposure, the business model of an Internet company is much easier to copy than a brick-and-mortar company one. Therefore, Internet startups must differentiate themselves and create competitive advantagesin areas that are not easily mimicked; otherwise they will be swallowed by the amount of competitors they will be facing.
In addition, the marketing strategy of the brick-and-mortar companies is morestraightforward than the marketing strategy of the Internet companies- this is due to the fact that, usually, brick-and-mortar companies have as a target local customers. However, as mentionedearlier, Internet companies have a broad range of customers, which will make it even harder to get the exposure they need.
Finally, Internet companies have to invest hugely in their websites. This is thecore place of their business. If these sites are not attractive, do not translate what the company is all about and its services, then the company will simply not succeed. Still, there are millions of...
