MY LEFT FOOT
Chapter 1
1. Why was the author’s birth considered a difficult one?
It was a difficult birth because both, mother and son, almost died while giving to birth.

2. Why wasn’t the author given a name immediately after his birth?
His mother had to recuperate after giving birth so he stayed at the hospital without a name because his mother wasn’t well enough to go to church tobaptize him.

3. When Christy was five, something happened that changed his life. What was it?
Christy graved a piece of chalk out of his sister’s hand with his left foot and drew a doodle on the slate. After that, he was able to replicate the letter “A” from his mother with it. That was proof that he could interact with his surroundings.

Chapter 2
1. Why did Christy’s mother start to teach himthe whole alphabet?
Christy’s mother thought that as he couldn’t talk, the only possible mean of communication for him was the written word.

2. How did she teach him to write the alphabet?
She would write down each letter and then she would erase them so that Christy would copy them by memory with his left foot.

3. Why was Christy reluctant to use shoes?
If he wore shoes, he was unable tocommunicate with others as his left foot would be covered.

4. Why didn’t Christy’s mother want Christy to grow up to be illiterate?
She knew that it would be a great disadvantage for Christy.

Chapter 3
1. How did Christy manage to move around?
He was pushed around by his brothers and sisters while being in an old go-cart they had. In the house he would crawl through it.

2. What didChristy do when Charlie and Sally were kissing each other in the bath?
He opened the faucet so the water would pour in the bathtub and then he crawled as fast as he could that way they wouldn’t see him as they came out.

Chapter 4
1. When Christy’s brothers took him out for walks, people sometimes stared at him. How did he feel about this?
Although he would notice it, he didn’t think about it.It was only natural for him to move around like that.

2. How did Christy feel when his go-cart broke down?
His isolation grew larger because now his brothers couldn’t take him with them when they went out. He now had a lot more time to think about himself and realized that something was wrong with him.

Chapter 5
1. Why did Christy hate mirrors?
He hated mirrors because in them he wouldsee his physical appearance which he hated as it wasn’t like a normal one and it didn’t allow him to do the same things that the other would do.

2. After Christy realized he was different from others, he felt very depressed. How did he overcome his depression?
He discovered painting, which was new to him, and filled him with enthusiasm.

3. Who was Katriona Delahunt?
She was a student socialworker at the Rotunda Hospital, where Christy’s mother is staying.

4. Why did Katriona come to visit Christy?
She had met his mother who told her about him and that he painted with his foot and made her very interested in meeting Christy.

Chapter 6
1. According to Christy, there was something special about Katriona Delahunt. What was it?
Katriona was able to encourage him with herenthusiasm, good will and happiness.

2. Why did a newspaper reporter and photographer come to visit Christy?
Katriona told the newspaper that organized the painting competition that there was a boy who had entered the competition that painted with his left foot.

3. How did the family find out that Christy had won the competition?
The family found out through the newspaper.

Chapter 7
1. Whydidn’t Christy use his left foot in the presence of other people?
He didn’t use his left foot in front of people he didn’t know very well because he felt like a circus performance.

2. Why did Christy decide to begin writing stories?
He had lots of thought and ideas he wanted to express but couldn’t through his paints.
