My teaching practice: strengths and weaknesses
Since I started teaching at PAL, I realized that I have many strong aspects but weaknesses too. The strong aspects I could notice when receivingfeedback from students and teachers observers, have been useful to me because I have exploited them in different ways. For example, they have told me that the material used is really nice, that I have areally good rapport with my students and that me and my partners help each other a lot. However, they remind me that I need to improve some aspects like giving feedback or correct students, lead-ins,links and timing.
“Teaching Practice is a time when you can begin to explore a variety of materials and build up knowledge of what is available”. (R. Gower & D.Philips, Teaching Practice, 2005.) In my opinion, material is an important aid that all English teachers should try, in order to explore our creativity and to have ss thinking in a more creative way. Thematerial I use is colorful, big enough and attractive to the eyes, so it can catch ss´s attention when presenting a difficult grammar point or a conversation strategy. I usually try to include not onlywall charts or flash cards, but videos, listening, songs and interesting readings. These materials have always given me good results, whether in developing the four skills, or just when presentingvocabulary.
Another strength that I consider very important is the rapport with my students. According to R. Gower & D. Phillips, (teaching practice, 2005) “ Rapport is such an important factor indetermining whether a class is a success or not. Students are prepared to contribute and learn to use the language more when the atmosphere is relaxed and you and the students all get on well together,and they have confidence in you”.
