La Influenza es una enfermedad respiratoria aguda muy contagiosa causada por alguno de los virus influenza (familia Orthomyxoviridae). Estos virus ARN presentan gran variabilidad antigénica en las glicoproteínas de superficie Hemaglutinina (H) y Neuraminidasa (N), relacionada con la ocurrencia deepidemias anuales y eventuales pandemias. La epidemia iniciada en marzo de 2009 en Norte América y responsable de la primera gran pandemia del siglo XXI, es causada por una nueva cepa viral denominada nueva influenza A(H1N1), producto del intercambio genético entre virus porcinos, avícolas y humanos. Durante el primer mes del brote epidémico se identificaron más de mil casos, principalmente enNorteamérica; siguió Europa, América Central y del Sur, Asia y Oceanía con decenas de miles de casos; hasta ser declarada por la OMS pandemia en alerta epidemiológica 6. Si bien el nuevo virus muestra moderada virulencia, los cambios significativos en la secuencia de H y N (27.2% y 18.2%, respectivamente) con respecto al virus A(H1N1) circulante en 2008, llevan a

pensar en la probabilidad denuevos cambios que pudieran alterar el comportamiento viral y de la pandemia. La prevención de la nueva influenza necesita basarse en investigaciones que orienten las directrices de las autoridades sanitarias para reducir el daño que pueda causar a su paso por nuestros países. Mientras que medidas básicas de precaución respiratoria y lavado de manos puedan reducir el curso de la propagación del virus,probablemente la confección de una nueva vacuna para esta cepa viral, represente la clave para aminorar el impacto de la pandemia. Influenza is a highly contagious acute respiratory disease caused by one of several influenza viruses belonging to Orthomyxoviridae family. These RNA viruses display a tremendous antigenic variability,mainly on both surface glicoproteins Haemagglutinin (H) and Neuraminidase (N). This variability is related to annual epidemics and eventually to pandemic. The outbreak beginning on March 2009, caused by the novel influenza A (H1N1), a reassorted swine, avian, and human virus, has become the first great pandemic of XXI century. More than a thousand cases during the first month of the epidemic wereidentified in North America, followed by Europe, Central and South America, Asia and Oceania, with more than one hundred thousand cases in five months, forcing the WHO to raise the level of influenza pandemic alert to phase 6. Even if this novel type of influenza virus does not appear to be severe in terms of virulence, evidences show significant changes in both H and N proteins, 27.2% and 18.2% of theamino acid sequence, respectively, compared to prior circulating H1N1 isolates in 2008, opening the likelihood of new changes that may alter the viral and pandemic behavior in

the future. Prevention of this novel influenza must be based on scientific research allowing health authorities to make wise decisions for diminishing the viral potential harm in our countries. While respiratoryprecautions and frequent hand washing probably slow down the virus spread throughout the world population, the development of a vaccine to this new influenza strain will be essential to blunt its ultimate pandemic impact.
