To see, to watch and to look at (diferencias)

Recuerdo que hace ya un buen tiempo, alguien me preguntó porqué en Estados Unidos no le entendían cuando entraba una tienda de ropa y decía:

- Seeing---> queriendo decir "mirando".

Al principio, ni siquiera yo comprendía muy bien la pregunta. Luego me entró la risa. ¡Claro! a ningún nativo se le ocurriría utilizar "see" para referirse aque está sólo mirando la ropa. ¿Qué diría entonces?

Diría:

- Just looking [chas luking]--> es decir I'm just looking. Estoy sólo mirando.

¿Y podría decir, por ejemplo, "Just watching"?

No, rotundo no porque la ropa de una tienda no se mueve.

Entonces, ¿cuál es la diferencia entre see, look (at) y watch?

- See: ver sin detenerse en el detalle, no buscando "mirar". Nota: Portanto, indica justamente lo que no hacemos en una tienda porque en una tienda entramos a mirar con detenimiento.

Ejemplos:

- I saw him yesterday. Lo vi ayer. Por ejemplo, "I was walking down the street and I saw him". Iba caminando por la calle y lo vi. Nota: No tenía intención de verle y lo vi.
- I'm sorry, I didn't see you. Lo siento, no te vi. (Si tropezamos con alguien, por ejemplo).
- Didyou see that? ¿Viste eso?

- "Look at" es mirar con detenimiento, cuando te quedas con los ojos fijos en un objeto o persona.

Ejemplos:

- What are you looking at? ¿A qué estás mirando?
- Why don't you look at me? ¿Por qué no me miras
- They never look where they have to look. Nunca miran donde tienen que mirar.

- "Watch" es mirar cosas o personas en movimiento. Nota: Por esta razónsiempre hablamos de "watch TV" - mirar la tele. No decimos: "see TV."

- Are you watching TV? ¿Estás mirando la televisión?
- We are going to watch a football match. Vamos a ver un partido de fútbol.
- She was watching the game. Ella estuvo mirando el juego.

Excepción: Con las películas se suele utilizar "see" not "watch" porque nos referimos generalmente a las películas que ya vimos opreguntamos si has visto una determinada película.

-See: ver sin mirar. Did you see that? ¿Viste eso?
-Look at: mirar con detenimiento. Look at that! ¡Mira éso!
-Watch: mirar algo que está en movimiento. What are you watching? ¿Qué estás mirando/observando? |

Ahora a practicar.

Traduce las siguientes oraciones:

- ¿Qué viste ayer?
- ¿Estás viendo la televisión?
-¡Mira eso!
- ¿Qué quieres ver?
- ¿Qué miras?
- Él siempre está mirando los partidos de fútbol.

- What did you see yesterday?
- Are you watching tv?
- Look at that!
- What do you want to see?
- What are you looking at?
- He is always watching football matches.
Very general:
Seeing is involuntary. I saw the mountain.
Watching is voluntary. What you watch is an activity, usually withmovement involved. I watched the game on TV last night.
Looking is voluntary. What you look at is usually an object, with no movement involved. I looked at the statue.

This is just my perception. Maybe others can confirm, contradict or improve on this.

Many students don't know the difference between these three words.
Look at these examples first:
* I can see Mt. Fuji from where I live.* Look at that baby girl! She's so cute!
* I'm going to stay home and watch TV tonight.
Can you tell the difference?
Well, "see" is an "inactive" verb.  So long as your eyes are open, you don't have to actively think about the action of "seeing".
"Look at" and "watch " are "active" verbs.  You have to actively think about the action of "looking" and "watching".  You have to want to doit. 
"Look at" is usually used when the action lasts for a short time, while "watch" is used for actions that last for a longer period of time.
