UDI Student Teaching Practicum

GENERAL GUIDELINES
Dear Student:
UDI students who are taking the BA in Teaching English must complete a teaching practicum before they graduate from the University. It is important for students to have guidance from an experienced and knowledgeable teacher who will be appointed by the English Department to supervise and give guidance regarding key aspects ofplanning and teaching performance. We believe this is crucial to succeeding in the profession. Associate Teacher is the term used for the teacher who is willing to open their classroom to a student teacher and to teach them the ins and outs of being a classroom teacher.
Please read these guidelines to be followed during the practicum.

1. Student Teachers should follow the schools’ rules andshould exhibit professional behavior at all times and adhere to the dress code of the school.

2. Student Teachers must arrive before the class starts. They may use this time to prepare for their lessons or assist in other activities.

3. Student Teachers should call their associate teacher and their university supervisor in advance if they will be absent from school.
4. The lesson plan shouldbe submitted to the associate teacher and the university supervisor ahead of time. The university supervisor should be given the approximate time of the lesson and when and where it will be taught. A warning note will be issued if this requirement is not met.

5. Student Teachers are required to prepare their own lesson plan for the periods where the university faculty supervisor will observe.Student Teachers are encouraged to try different strategies and arrangements for the classroom.

6. Student Teachers need to get feedback from the associate teacher and the university supervisor after the lesson is taught.

7. During the class student teachers’ cell phones should be on the silent.

GENERAL STATEMENT
Universidad del Istmo(UDI) is committed topreparing excellent teachers at the B.A. in Teaching English. Research indicates that the most important school factor in how well children learn is the quality of their teachers. Effective teachers know their subject matter well and they understand how children grow and develop. Effective teachers have high expectations for their students’ learning. They know a variety of teaching methods and canuse them effectively to help students learn. Effective teachers know how much their students are learning and understand the learning styles and strengths of their students. They are also caring and creative, and they know how to establish a positive learning atmosphere for their students. Universidad del Istmo drew upon these understandings to develop its teacher preparation program.OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of the Teaching Practicum are:
1- To improve ESL teaching methods and expand professional education skills.
2- To develop thoughtful objectives in the ESL planning.
3- To integrate the foundations of bilingual education in classroom management.
4-To align the ESL class contents with accurate reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities.
5- To use adequate evaluationand classroom assessment forms and techniques.
PRACTICUM DURATION
The practicum phase entails approximately 8 weeks out of the quarter, five days per week, of high school classroom experience or 8 weeks, 5 days per week, of elementary school level. This totals approximately 40 days, of intense class preparation work, teaching, clean-up, meetings, reports writing, supervision etc.

PRACTICUMVISITS

Students will receive an on- site visit from a course representative from UDI at least twice during the practicum. These visits are intended to provide support and feedback to the student. Students should view these visits as opportunities to ask questions and discuss concerns with the UDI supervisor.
