Surveillance Art Essay Response

The whole concept of surveillance is a very scary one. In a way itmakes me feel safe because I know someone is watching over me from the dangers of criminals and terrorists. But it also makes me very uncomfortable the thought of beingwatched by countless of people. To think of surveillance as an art medium can be a bit hard to process at the beginning, but once it is explained, the idea becomes moreacceptable.
The essay Artveillance: At the Crossroads of Art and Surveillance by Andrea Mubi Brighenti, reviews many types of artworks such as artistic performances andinstallations that deal with the subject of surveillance. According to Brighenti “the degree of asymmetry between looking and being looked at reveals the deep, intricaterelationship between vision and power”. By this, Brighenti explores the depth of intimate feelings one gets from the uneasiness that comes from recognizing one is being watched. One of the artist’s that uses surveillance as an art medium is James Coupe. The Seatle-based researcher at the University of Washington builds “self-organizingand interconnected art systems” (Brighenti). Coupe had an installation in Cambridge UK during 2007 that included ten custom-built cameras. His installation “(Re)collector”captures the range in specific human behavior. By this method, Brighenti’s concept of “realization” is reinforced.
Besides video, interrogation, voice recording, andphotography are among the Medias used in surveillance art. Surveillance can be both a good and bad thing but it is the way that surveillance is used that should matter.
