Preface

Soil Taxonomy--a basic system of soil classification for making and

interpreting soil surveys--was published in 1975 by the Soil Conservation

Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (Agriculture Handbook No. 436,

754 pp.). The publication is the culmination of 25 years of work bystaff

of the Soil Conservation Service and international cooperators. Even

before its final publication, the draft was being used and tested by many

countries in the world. In non-English speaking countries, parts of the

system were being translated into local languages. The Soil Survey of

India has reprinted the book without any changes. An Italian edition

was published in 1980 byEdagricole and the keys to the system have been

translated into Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia and Chinese.

In 1981, a decision was made by the Soil Management Support Services (SMSS)

to translate the book into Spanish and French. The Spanish translation

was made by a team of South American Soil Scientists under the leadership

of Dr. Armand Van Wambeke of Cornell University. We greatly...
