Dear Sofía,
I’m glad to hear from you. I always love to know about young fans thatsee me as an inspiration. And I’m glad I am still a remembered athlete although I stopped competing long time ago. Gymnastics is a sport that you should start training from a young age for success, soI think you are on the right path.
I began training at the age of 5 and competing locally since then, but my first national competition was at the age of 9. The biggest challenge I had to face werethe rumors in the news papers about an affair I had with the son of Ceauşescu, the president of that time. Another challenge was the fact that I was very young when I made the first perfect punctuationin the world, so I didn’t really appreciated the moment. I just didn’t know the importance of it and also I wasn’t so prepared for the pressure of the Olympics since I was the youngest one. Anotherchallenge for me was the fact that in 1981 I wasn’t able to be trained by Bela Karolyi who had been my coach since I was 6 years old.
My inspiration wasn’t a person, but rather my inspiration was mypassion. That was what moved me to go and make a huge effort in practicing and doing gymnastics; I love this sport so that made me have great results. The truth is that I always want to compete. Ilove competing; I love doing this sport, and I had a great passion for getting better and better at it. I dropped out from competition in 1984; I had already won several championships. I didn’t gotseparated from this sport. I trained the American team, I commented the Olympics of Athens and Beijing and I have several positions in the Gymnastics Federation of Rumania and the USA. My husband and Ihave a charity corporation where we help children to get into sport’s world and get to be amateur and maybe be professional. We are also part of a great club in the USA.
