In her article in the, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Jessica Pauline Ogilvie takes her stand on spanking. The beginning of her passage has an anti-spanking tone and uses research evidence that spankingleads to serious and expected side effects such as aggression and depression. On the other hand, the second part of Ogilvie’s passage suggests that she is pro-spanking with her statement thatspanking does not cause serious side effects as explained earlier. She uses experiments performed by scientists and her own research to support her claim. Although many people around the country takespanking as a form of physical abuse, I must say that I disagree. Spanking should be used as a disciplinary measure for bad behavior. I also believe spanking is a fundamental element that is needed to shaperespectful children.

Spanking is essential in the raising of future respectful children. For example, a child should be spanked when they disrespect someone or something to show them that whatthey did is not acceptable. My mother used to spank me anytime I would talk back to her or one of my relatives no matter how old they were and I am grateful for that because I developed a sense ofrespect for everyone and everything that is hard to encounter nowadays. Another situation when a child should be spanked is when they steal something. Children see such actions at common stores andtelevision and think that it is correct when it is actually not. I recall when I was about 6 years old, I stole candy from a store and when my mother saw me with it she realized she did not pay for it andthat I stole it and boy oh boy did

she teach me a thing or two. She spanked me and lectured me on the dangers of stealing and the consequences it amounts to, and on top of that we went back to thestore and I had to return and apologize for taking it, and I must say I have not stolen ever since.
