Narcissistic Personality Disorder
We question ourselves, what is Narcissistic Personality Disorder? Well it is used to describe some kind of problem in a person or group's relationships with selfand others. In everyday speech, "narcissism" often means inflated self-importance, egoism, vanity, conceit, or simple selfishness. The name Narcissistic came from a hunter from the territory ofThespian in Boeotia who was renowned for his beauty. He was exceptionally proud, in that he disdained those who loved him. Nemesis saw this and attracted Narcissus to a pool where he saw his own reflection inthe waters and fell in love with it, not realizing it was merely an image. Unable to leave the beauty of his reflection, Narcissus died. How is Narcissism diagnosed you might ask, well Narcissisticpersonality disorders are typically diagnosed by a trained mental health professional, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist. Family physicians and general practitioners are generally not trained orwell-equipped to make this type of psychological diagnosis. So while you can initially consult a family physician about this problem, they should refer you to a mental health professional for diagnosisand treatment. There are no laboratories, blood or genetic tests that are used to diagnose personality disorder. The professional will compare your symptoms and life history with those already listedand he will make a determination whether your symptoms meet the criteria necessary for a personality disorder diagnosis. Its traits are an obvious self-focus in interpersonal exchanges, problems insustaining satisfying relationships, a lack of psychological awareness in psychology and psychiatry, ego syntonic, difficulty with empathy, problems distinguishing the self from others, hypersensitivityto any insults or imagined insults, vulnerability to shame rather than guilt, flattery towards people who admire and affirm them, detesting those who do not admire them, using other people without...
