Introduction
This document presents the main characteristics of a rare disease called Narcolepsy, based on different arguments from different authors. Movingthrough symptoms, what kind of people acquires this disease, and the causes and effects of Narcolepsy stages. It considers how this disease is developed focusing on common aspects a person with Narcolepsy may suffer. In addition to explain the key elements are involved into this disease. Therefore, you will be able to discover the relevance of Narcolepsy.
What is Narcolepsy?
Could you imaginestanding around talking to your friends and just dropping to the floor and falling asleep? Or after watching a movie? Narcolepsy may seem like just a joke but it is not a joke, it is a really serious condition. Just imagine falling asleep without knowing when and where it is going to happen. This is what people with narcolepsy have to go through every day of their life. They just pass out at any giventime without even knowing what is going to happen to them.
Most of the people do not know this rare disease which became affect American people. Most individuals with the disorder are not diagnosed and are thus not treated. In other cases people could suffer the disorder and their lifetime might be in danger. However in this essay you may discover the changes that people suffer with this disease.“Narcolepsy is considered a primary hypersomnia condition. The word Narcolepsy comes from two Greek words roughly translated as "seized by numbness." (Mahowald 2007: 49). According to the author, Narcolepsy is considered a hypersomnia condition due to the excess of sleep at any time of the day.
Dodel et al. states that:
“Narcolepsy is a chronic disorder of the centralnervous system
having elemental causes and amazing effects. It is characterized by the
brain´s inability to control sleep-wake cycles. People with narcolepsy ex-
perience irresistible and sudden bouts of sleep, which can last from a few
seconds to several minutes. (2007:33)
Regarding what the author states, in Narcolepsy sleep episodes can occur atany time. People unwillingly fall asleep while at work or at school, when having a conversation, playing a game, eating a meal, or, most dangerously when driving an automobile. Therefore it will mention the key symptoms of this disorder.
Symptoms of Narcolepsy
“EDS (Excessive Daytime Sleepiness), the symptom most consistently experienced by almost all individuals with narcolepsy is usuallythe first to become clinically apparent. “ (Aran 2010: 64). In spite of this there are three common symptoms of Narcolepsy;
* Sudden loss of muscle tone
* Sleep paralysis
* Hallucinations
