Drown
Junot Diaz in his novel “Drown” is filled with different stories of an Immigrant family set in the Dominican Republic. Through his book we are able to further understand the life of thenarrator as he grows up, we learn about his love, his mother struggle to support her two kids, his long gone father who he doesn’t seem to wan to remember. Each of hi stories have very detailed, vibrant andbeautiful. The book is set up very well taking us back in forth in the narrator’s life as a young boy and older.
One of the most beautiful and strong descriptions that Junot Diaz presents us isone about love. We get to see how the narrator falls in love with a girl is completely and utterly wrong for him. His friends tell him that she should stop seeing this girl but he just cant , hementions “On some nights especially when Cut fucking his girl… I want us to be like that again” implying that he misses aurora and wants to keep living in the past(54). Love is so powerful that when you haveit you never want to let it go. Both of the characters have hurt each other but somehow they still are there for one another. We see this contraction of how love cant be tow different things, at timethe narrator mention that they fight an he hits her and makes her bleed and that she throws everything at him( 65). We also see how kind and fragile their love can be, when Aurora kisses parts of hisface that almost never get touched helps us understand that she actually does care (52). His love for her is so big that anything she ask him to do he will do it in a heartbeat because he loves her.In his stories we also tend to see the memories he had as a young kid. The book begins to tell how he remembers being sent to the campos in the summer when his mother worked. The narrator begins totells us that “he didn’t mind these summers” because he got a chance to keep busy and think (5).
