1. There is a confusion in relation to the terms Natural Disaster and Natural Hazard.
2. A natural disaster is the effect of a natural hazard (e.g., flood, tornado,hurricane, volcanic eruption, earthquake, or landslide).
3. An earthquakes is a Natural Hazard and the consequences are a disaster.
4. So we should call Earthquakes Natural Hazards. Floods, tornados,hurricanes, volcanic eruptions and landslides are all Natural Hazards.
5. It leads to financial, environmental or human losses.
6. The resulting loss depends on the vulnerability of theaffected population to resist the hazard.

Earthquake
1. An earthquake is a sudden shake of the Earth's layer caused by the tectonic plates colliding.
2. The vibrations may vary in magnitude.3. That’s why the Ritcher scale is used to measure magnitudes.
4. The underground origin of the earthquake is called the “focus”.
5. The point directly above the focus on the surface is calledthe"epicenter".
6. The number of victims depends on population density, construction quality, safety system, population knowledge in relation to what to do in these situation, etc.

Some of themost significant earthquakes in recent times include:
• The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami registered a moment magnitude of 9.0. Do you Know about it?
