Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basoalto Eliecer born on July 12, 1904, in Parral. His parents were: Rosa Basoalto Opazo Naphtali, a high school teacher of girls, and his father, Jose Angel Reyes, was maquinista.Ambos worker and later married in 1903.

Rosa died of tuberculosis a few weeks after giving birth to Naphtali, his only son. This absence mark below the poet, who wrote two poems dedicated toher: Luna and humble lines to rest My Mother, the book The Invisible River, published years after his death (1980).

Naphtali, named in memory of her mother. Educated the early years of his life at the home of his grandparents. His father moved to Temuco, where he married Trinidad Candia Marverde, called by the child as "mamadre" Laurita and Rodolfo were his siblings by the father.

Neftali Reyes began writing poetry at a young age in various newspapers and magazines.

It was in 1920 when it adopted the pseudonym of Pablo Neruda (by the Czech poet Jan Neruda).

In 1943, the poet moved with Delia del Carril, his new wife, to live in Isla Negra.

In March 1945 he was elected senator for Tarapacá and Antofagasta, and joined the Communist Party.

On May 30, 1945, won the National Book Award, and the same year, on December 28, legally adopted his name as PabloNeruda. In this period, too, began his political career by being elected senator.

In 1946, he was appointed national propaganda chief presidential candidate Gabriel González Videla. In addition, he met Matilde Urrutia, who later would become his new wife.
