Created in 1880 in its original size, about 70 cm, to decorate the tympanum of La Porte de l' Enfer [ Gate of Hell ] , Le Penseur [ The Thinker ] is then entitled Le Poète [ The Poet ] : depictingDante , author of the Divine Comedy that inspired La Puerta, leaning forward to watch the circles of Hell , pondering his work. Le Penseur [ The Thinker ] was therefore initially be both a torturedbody , almost damnado , and a free spirit , determined to transcend their suffering through poetry . For pose, this figure owes much alUgolin [ Ugolino ] Jean -Baptiste Carpeaux (1862 , Musée d'Orsay ,Paris) and the seated portrait of Lorenzo de Medici sculpted by Michelangelo ( 1526-153 , the Medici Chapel , Church San Lorenzo , Florence). While maintaining its position in the monumental complex ofLa Puerta, Le Penseur [ The Thinker ] was shown separately from 1888 , thus becoming an autonomous work. Creado ya en 1880 en su tamaño original, unos70 cm, para decorar el tímpano de La Porte de l’Enfer [La Puerta del Infierno], Le Penseur [El Pensador]se titulaba entonces Le Poète [El Poeta]: representaba a Dante, el autor de La Divina Comedia queinspiró La Puerta, inclinado hacia delante para observar los círculos del Infierno, meditando sobre su obra.
