Location and Population
New Zealand lies in the south west Pacific Ocean, nearly 2 000 kms from Australia. New Zealand is over 1.600 kilometres long, and its widest part is 450kilometres. The total land area is around 270 550 square kilometres, with approximately 10 000 kilometres of coastline. The capital city is Wellington, with a population of approximately 360 000 people,and a total population of 4 252 277
The climate
New Zealand has a largely temperate climate. While the far north has subtropical weather during summer, and inland alpine areas of the South Islandcan be as cold as -10°C in winter, most of the country lies close to the coast, which means mild temperatures. The average New Zealand temperature decreases as you travel south. January and February arethe warmest months, and July is the coldest month of the year.
Urban and Sophisticated
New Zealand has absorbed the new culinary tastes, fashions, and lifestyles of the Pacific Rim and combinedthem with more traditional ones to produce a unique New Zealand identity. Today, Kiwis are as likely to visit an Asian restaurant or modern art gallery as they are to attend a rugby game or milk a cow!Language and Religion
The official languages are English and Maori with English being spoken by all. Māori is spoken by more than 160,000 people. One in four Māori speak the language, and consciousefforts have been made to keep it alive. They have no official state religion although all religions are worshipped and accepted.
Outdoor
New Zealand has a low population density and spectacularscenery. As a result, many New Zealanders have a love of their landscape and the outdoors. Hiking, mountaineering, and kayaking are enjoyed by many New Zealanders, while many more will explore theirlandscape with a trip to the beach.
