In the financial services sector Eurosmart estimates that the growth of contactless cards was 33% in
2008 (up from 60 to 80 million units). This trend should continue in 2009 and will be strengthened by
the emergence of Mobile Services with a small portion of SIM cards becoming Secure Contactless-support
cards. EMV Migration will continue todeliver a double digit growth said Eurosmart. Financial operators
are also intending to leverage their EMV infrastructure to become Identity Management Operators, giving
the smart card industry an opportunity to develop a new Service offering, said the association.
Despite the uncertainty of the economy, ePassport shipments should continue to grow to reach 70
million units in 2009, predictedEursosmart. Several new eID programs should start next year, some in
volume deployment, some still in pilot phases but overall all contributing to the general growth trend.
Eurosmart also confirmed its estimates for the contactless market, which it said will represent 610
million units in 2008 (see Figure 3). The association’s estimates for the secure contactless market, include
financial services, government, transport and healthcare markets, but exclude access control or ticketing.
In the contactless market a significant portion of Mobile NFC Services will be accounted for inside
the SIM card figures. The SIM card is now a standardized secure element for service provisioning and
for applications hosting in the mobile phone. Multiple pilot trials of Mobile Payment and Mobile MassTransit services will materialize in mass deployments over the next few years, the association predicts.

Under the agreement, NXP receives the freedom to use CRI’s patents as part of its strategy to
develop and enhance its secure chips and related
software for smart cards and other security-conscious applications. The license also covers software executing on NXP chips, allowing NXP’s
customers to develop their own security countermeasures without a separate license from CRI.
DPA is a form of attack that involves monitoring the fluctuating electrical power consumption of
a target device and then using advanced statistical
methods to derive cryptographic keys and other
secrets. Strong countermeasures to DPA help protect keys contained in tamper-resistantdevices, such
as smart cards or electronic IDs, which may be used
in banking, pay television, mass transit, secure ID,
wireless telecommunications and other industries.
Cryptography Research has been awarded a
portfolio of patents covering countermeasures
to DPA attacks.
Earlier this year the company announced that
Infineon, Renasas and Visa had become licensees of its patents.

The contactless mobile phone payments trial
involves a group of 200 consumers and 12 merchants in Melbourne. Consumers can download

onto their Telstra mobile phone SIM card.
Afterwards they are able to pay for goods or
services simply by waving their mobile phone
over a reader device at the merchant’sstore.
Sagem Orga is taking part in this project
together with Sagem Mobiles delivering SWP

Sagem Orga USIM was enhanced by replacing the VISA SDA MSD applet with VISA’s
