Nineteenth and twentieth century settlements
The twelve remaining border settlements considered in this study were founded in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Two resulted from theimposition of the border, three began as a military garrison, five were international gateways or transit points, and two were agricultural colonies.
These cities are:
Tijuana and Nuevo Laredo in 1848Piedras negras and Las Vacas were founded in 1849 and 1877 respectively, as a military post along the Rio Grande frontier in the state of Coahuila.
From the 1880’s trough the early 1900’s five bordersettlements, Nogales Agua Prieta, Tecate, Naco and Las Palomas were founded as gateways or transit points connecting to nearly simultaneously founded border settlements añong the U.S. side of the line.The remaining Mexican border settlements, Mexicali, San Luis Rio Colorado and Miguel Aleman were founded in the twentieth century.

Twentieth century growth phases and changing demography
In 1910,Mexico was an agrarian society; nearly three fourths of its people lived in villages with populations of 100 to 2500.
By the 1980, nearly three fourths of its people lived in urban places withpopulations larger than 2500. The rapid growth of Mexico’s population in the late twentieth century is illustrated by the fact the growth alone in national population between 1960 and 1970 exceed the totalpopulation of Mexico in 1910. Further, Mexico’s population growth between 1970 and 1980 surpassed the total population of the country in 1940.
In 1990 the eighteen border cities counted more thanthree and one half million people, or 35% of the total population of the five northern Border States excluding Nuevo Leon.

The numbers do suggest comparative growth phases by settlement size
