The ISO 9000:2000 family of standards was developed to assist organizations, of all types and sizes, to implement and operate an effective quality management system (QMS). It is made up of four core standards:

a) ISO 9000:2000 Quality management systems - Fundamentals and vocabulary describes the fundamentals of a QMS and specifies theterminology for a QMS. It was developed on the basis of previous standards: ISO 8402:1994 Quality management and quality assurance - Vocabulary, and lS0 9000-1:1994 Quality management and quality assurance standards - Part 1: Guidelines for selection and use.

b) ISO 9001:2000 Quality management systems - Requirements specifies requirements for a QMS where an organization needs to demonstrate its abilityto provide products that meet customer requirements and applicable regulatory requirements and aims to enhance customer satisfaction. The three quality assurance requirement standards ISO 9001:1994, ISO 9002:1994, and ISO 9003:1994 are replaced by this single quality management system requirement standard.

c) ISO 9004:2000 Quality management systems - Guidelines for performance improvements, which replaces ISO 9004-1:1994, provides guidelines for both the effectiveness and efficiency of the QMS. The aim of this standard is the improvement of the performance of an organization and the satisfaction of customers and other interested parties. Considerably rewritten, ISO 9004:2000 was developed using the format and structure of ISO 9001:2000.

d) ISO 19011:2002 Guidelines for qualityand/or environmental management systems auditing provides guidance on auditing quality and environmental management systems, and was developed jointly by ISO/TC 176 Quality management and quality assurance and ISO/TC 207 Environmental management. ISO/TC 207 is responsible for the ISO 14000 family of environmental management standards (EMS). ISO 19011 replaced not only ISO 10011 Parts 1, 2, and 3, usedfor QMS auditing, but also the EMS auditing standards in the ISO 14000 family, namely ISO 14010, lS0 14011, and ISO 14012,

Together the four standards (ISO 9000, ISO 9001, ISO 9004, and ISO 19011) form a coherent set of QMS standards facilitating mutual understanding in national and international trade.

ISO 9000:2000 in the software sector

ISO 9000:2000 is a specific family of standardswhich is referred to under this generic title for convenience. This family consist of standards and guidelines relating to quality management systems, and related supporting standards on terminology and specific tools. It has been written in general terms, i.e. it may be applied within manufacturing industries or service organizations in any sector.

At present, ISO has a set of guidelines whichhelp in the implementation of ISO 9001:2000 in the software sector, namely: ISO/IEC 90003:2004 Software engineering -- Guidelines for the application of ISO 9001:2000 to computer software

ISO/IEC 90003:2004 provides guidance for organizations in the application of ISO 9001:2000 to the acquisition, supply, development, operation and maintenance of computer software and related support services.ISO/IEC 90003:2004 does not add to or otherwise change the requirements of ISO 9001:2000.

The guidelines provided in ISO/IEC 90003:2004 are not intended to be used as assessment criteria in quality management system registration/certification.

The application of ISO/IEC 90003:2004 is appropriate to software that is
- part of a commercial contract with another organization,
- a productavailable for a market sector,
- used to support the processes of an organization,
- embedded in a hardware product, or
- related to software services.

Some organizations may be involved in all the above activities; others may specialize in one area. Whatever the situation, the organization's quality management system should cover all aspects (software related and non-software related)...
