North America

Look at the map on the opposite page. It is a map of North America. North America is one of the seven continents. The others are South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, andAntarctica.

Mexico is one of the three large countries on the continent of North America. The other two are Canada and United States. The other major part of this continent is Central America.Central America is the part of North America between Mexico and South America, and includes seven countries: Guatemala, British Honduras (Belize), El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.There is also an important group of islands, called the West Indies, which are near the North American continent. The three largest countries in the West Indies are Cuba, the Dominican Republic andHaiti. Some of the Smaller islands of the West Indies have ties with England, France, the Netherlands or the United States.

Alaska:
Alaska was a territory of the United States until 1959, when itbecame the forty-ninth state. Three important cities are Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau. English is spoken in Alaska.

Canada:
Canada is the largest country in the area on the North Americancontinent. Although it is a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations, Canada is a completely independent country, It is divide into ten provinces and two territories. Ottawa is the capital city, butMontreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Hamilton all have larger populations than the capital. Although most Canadians speak English, almost one third of the population speaks French.
MostFrench-speaking Canadians live in the province of Quebec. There are also large groups of Indians and Eskimos in Canada.

The United States:
