1. Short and Long adjectives.
Qualitative adjectives are adjectives which show that a person, an animal or an object have a specific quality,which can be gradable. Qualitative adjectives can be divided into long and short.
The distinction between long and short adjectives usually depends on the number of syllables in the adjective.
1.one-syllable adjectives are considered short.
When building comparative forms, we should add er/r/ier to the end of the adjective.
e.g. short-shorter nice-nicer dry-drier fat-fatterWhen building superlative forms, we should add est/st/iest to the end of the adjective.
e.g. short-shortest nice-nicest dry-driest fat-fattest
2. two-syllable adjectives ending in y areconsidered short.
When building comparative forms, we should add ier to the end of the adjective.
e.g. easy-easier happy-happier pretty-prettier
When building superlative forms, weshould add iest to the end of the adjective.
e.g. easy-easiest happy-happiest pretty-prettiest
Some two-syllable adjectives are considered long.
Some other two-syllable adjectives have bothkinds of comparative and superlative forms:
e.g. common, cruel, gentle, narrow, pleasant, polite, remote, simple, stupid, subtle, etc.
Common-commoner-commonest; common-more common-the most common3. three or more syllable adjectives are considered long.
When building comparative forms, we should add more in front of the adjective.
e.g. intelligent-more intelligent, expensive-moreexpensive
When building superlative forms, we should add the most in front of the adjective.
e.g. intelligent-the most intelligent, expensive-the most expensive

Short adjectives
-Adjectives of just one syllable form the comparative by adding "-er":
Bright … brighter
Clear … clearer
