NYC Subway System: Our City’s
Transportation is one of the biggest challenges a person deals with everyday. We are constantly moving around and we are expected to find the ways to reach places that are around us. Living in the city makes transportation a huge aspect of a citizen’s life because the size of city usually allows to the placing of important locations all over thecity. New York City is one of the biggest cities and one of the most greatly populated in the world, and its citizens have to constantly be moving around. There are all types of social economic statuses in the city, and average salary people have the possibility of having cars which is most places would be the ideal method of transportation, yet in New York City might not be so. Because of theextension of the city and the amount of people that live in it, going from place to place can become a headache when you need to go from borough to borough or into the city, and there are thousand people seeking to do the same trip. Traffic jams, crashes, accidents, parades, strikes, city celebrations are some the things that might not allow people in New York to move as freely and quickly on the streetsas they would like to, especially since New Yorkers find time to be the most precious thing in the world. Therefore, the city developed its own public transportation system; a system that’s in constant evolution and that allows New Yorkers to move around the hundreds of stations located all around the city in a faster way without needing a vehicle, but yet a system that makes people who live inNew York dependent of the agencies that run it.
The New York City’s subway is system is the biggest public transportation system in the United States of America and one of the most extensive in the world. It is owned by the city but leased to an agency called MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) and it has between 420 and 470 stations. Even though it’s known as “the subway” referring tothe underground system, it also has external stations that give the city exterior structures made of steel. The NYC Subway system stations are found throughout the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx. It operates twenty for hours, seven days a week and it’s in continuous re-structuring.
The first elevated line opened 1885 and the first subway line was incorporated in 1904.During the time that the meter first opened, the lines were grouped in two different systems and were private property of the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company and the Interborough Rapid Transit Company. The first line operated in by the Independent Subway System did not open until 1932 and it was estimated to compete directly with the private systems. In 1940, the two private systems were bought and someelevated lines were closed. It took them time to integrate them but they finally came to create the great system they have today.
Nowadays, the NYC Transportation System transports millions of New Yorkers everyday and it is a daily deal of the citizens’ lives. As the system grows bigger and more powerful, new things are added to it. For instance, people used to pay with the token but accordingto the MTA, in May 14th, 1997 the entire subway system accepts MetroCards. This allows users to charge their card with the amount they need based on their needs. The fair is $2.50 for a single ride, but if a weekly or monthly MetroCard is purchased the price per ride decreases. There is no discrimination when it comes to the MTA’s system, since people all around the city use it starting from thehomeless to the business executives whose needs are looking for effectiveness.
The subway system has become a very important aspect of New York City, and we find it everywhere. It is one of the biggest targets for terrorists, artists who want to perform their talents and cannot do it in the great leagues and many others who want to have a catch of New York’s population. Many movies, songs,...
