WHY IS THERE AN INCREASING RATE OF OBESITY IN MEXICO?
Of the 1.200 millions of people who have overweight and obesity problems in the entire world, 80 millions of they are Mexicans. Did you know that, according to the OECD, Mexico, in 2010, was named as the first place in children obesity (one of each five kids have overweight and obesity) and second place in woman obesity? It’s a fact thatMexico has been getting worse in the last years about 70% of the Mexican adults are now overweight, according to government statements. Mexico occupies the 4th place in child obesity behind: Greece, Italy and the United States.
In Mexico, 73% of the women over twenty years are overweight (that’s equal to 20.52 million of woman); 66% of men of twenty years are overweight (that’s equal to 16.96million of man); and 26% of children are overweight (that’s equal to 5.54 million of the population of children). Three of four hospital’s beds are occupied for patients with obesity problems. Also, obesity affects our job, 25% of works disabilities are of obesity related conditions. A total of 2.8 million lives are lost each year in the whole world, according to the “Organización Mundial de la Salud”(OMS). In fact, it’s the fifth cause of dead worldwide.
Anybody is interesting about how this kind of illness can affect our lives, because they are not interesting in it. But the obesity in Mexico has an alarming statistics. Of course that government has organized programs to combat obesity, such as the Program of Prevention and Control of Obesity in the D.F., but this seems not to give resultsat the society and at the people way of act and think.
But why is this happening in Mexico? Which are the causes and the consequences that this problem will give to us as society in the future? Why is so important to talk about this diseases? Why Mexico is one of the countries that have this problem most? What shall we do to eradicate this problem? Who is going to suffer this problem at thefuture? But the most important thing is to know what is being done by society and also what is being done by the Mexican Government? In the following research we are going to analyze the problem and we are going to propose how we can eradicate it.
The first point to view here is why and how is this happening in our country. Seven of each ten Mexicans have overweight, and this is due to increasedconsumption of junk food and products elaborated with refined flour, sugar and vegetables fats with lots of calories. A report of the IMSS said that the junk food that we are used to eat is not the bigger problem in our country. The true problem in that most of the people don’t do any kind of sport, and this makes the situation worse. “Centro Para el Control y Prevención de Enfermedades” (CDC)estimate that a person eats daily 100 calories more that they burn, and wins one Libra of weight at the month. Also, Mexico has become in the paradise of junk food or fast food chains that sell products with oil and saturated fats, because, nowadays, there are prohibited in United Estates for causing serious heath damage, without any restrictions of the part of health authorities. Mexicans spendapproximately 240 thousand millions of pesos each year in the consume of junk food, and 10 thousand millions in the consume of ten basic aliments. “There need to be mew politics for limit the fast food chains of the use of oil and saturated fats, which are prohibited in U.S.A. because they elevate the cholesterol and make heart attacks” said Jaime Burkle, director of “Medico de Asuntos Globales delHospital Piedmont de Atlanta”, later of give the results of an investigations of alimental habits.
Also, the children in Mexico watch 12 hours and a half television in a week. A kid between 4 and 12 years old can watch 61 publicity announcements per day, almost 22 thousand of messages in a year.
