The Columbus Park is one of the parks or historic places of the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo, which served as the main center of celebration of colonial society.The park was built in the colonial era in 1506.
This was the main center of entertainment for people of the era, and that gave life and splendor of the town of La Isabela, and surroundings. The namewas given in honor of Commander of the Order of Mayor Nicolás de Ovando, who arrived in 1502 to Santo Domingo. In the center of this park we find the statue of Cristobal Colón pointing a finger atthe north.
Columbus Park is currently used as the main center of cultural activities and also forms part of World Heritage site of Santo Domingo.Church of Las Mercedes

The First Cathedral of America, also known as Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor, is a cathedral dedicated to St. Mary of the Incarnation, is located in the Colonial Zone of SantoDomingo.
It is the oldest cathedral in America. It was consecrated by Papa Julio II in 1504. Headquarters of the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo, their construction began in 1512 under the leadership ofBishop Fray García Padilla. The arrival of Bishop Alexander Geraldini in 1519 led to the construction of a temple of greater solemnity, which was decided by the construction of the present church,whose foundation stone was laid in 1521.
