Oprah Winfrey was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi January 29, 1954. Growing up, Mrs. Winfrey didn’t have many opportunities to be where she stands now. She was born to teenage parents and lived withher grandmother until age six. Then, she moved to live with her mother in Milwaukee. Life with her mother was a living nightmare; she was molested and raped by close relatives at a very young age.She kept quiet about her tragedies, and rebelled. Her mom planned to send her in a detention home, but they denied the request. Instead, Oprah was sent to live with her strict father in Nashville,Tennessee. Living with her father was when her opportunities began. Oprah’s father set strict rules and discipline for her to follow. She had to read books and do a book report for him. Herfather helped her change her way of life. She entered beauty pageants and won as “Miss Black Nashville” and “Miss Tennessee.” Winning the pageants led to a part time news position on a black radiostation. She then hosted a program in Baltimore for eight years. Next, she was recruited by a Chicago T.V. station to host A.M. Chicago, which later on became “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Her show became ahuge hit, because of her heart-loving and down to earth personality. Oprah doesn’t forget where she came from. Oprah Winfrey is an African American and Native American. Back in her adolescent years,she used to be poor, along with her parents. As everyone knows, Oprah Winfrey is a successful woman. She was ranked as one of the world's most influential/powerful woman. Oprah has set upmany organizations to support education.
