DESIGN SOLUTIONS
An intelligent MCC solution would address these requirements through theuse of a device-level-communication network, intelligent motor-control components, and integrated preconfigured software. Up until now, MCCs have been received without interwiring and requiredextensive field wiring, documenting, testing, and system integration. The integrated, intelligent MCC arrives ready to install, protested and preconfigured (i.e., “plug and play”).
Device-Level CommunicationNetwork
A wide variety of device-level communication networks are available. The network in the integrated MC should offer a proven track record, sufficient throughput for control and monitoring,and physical media suitable for the MCC application.

Proven, Open-Communication Network
The trend toward open networks (as apposed to proprietary networks) is clear. Table 1 provides a usefulchecklist for choosing a network. The open networks DeviceNet and foundation Fieldbus are evaluated as examples. The table demonstrates that, while bout are useful. DeviceNet is well salted to MCCapplications.

Physical Media Suitable for MCC Application
The obvious approach for routing network cables in MCCs is through the horizontal and vertical wireways adjacent to the power wiring. A betrersolution is to isolate trunk lines and drop lines behind barriers, avoiding potential damage to communication cables during installation and maintenance activities.
