Activity 2.3 - Assignment: OSHA Inspections
Basedupon the information presented by Goetsch in Chapter 6 of the text, the videos previously viewed, and based upon the information on the OSHA website, complete the following activity: Describe, in yourown words, how an OSHA workplace inspection would proceed from the first step to the last step.
According to the video (OSHA office of information and consumer affairs [OSHA], n.d.)
An OSHA safetyinspection is conducted in the following manner:
Pre-inspection
Compliance officer learns relevant facts about the industry.
Researches history of Establishment.
Reviews all OSHA standards thatapply to the work place
Selects proper test equipment to measure air quality, noise levels, electrical hazards and other potential dangers.
Inspection
OSHA compliance officer arrives at work place,introduces himself/herself and presents appropriate credentials.
Asks to meet with employer
Opening conference is conducted
Defines purpose and scope of inspection
Employer designates arepresentative to accompany OSHA inspector during the inspection usually the plant manager or supervisor.
If inspection is conducted because of a complaint, a copy of complaint is presented to the employer andrepresentative.
An employee representative may also be designated to accompany compliance officer during the inspection in order to represent the interests of all employees.
Compliance officerreviews OSHA required records, employer safety and health program
After opening conference the compliance officer and company representatives begin walk around.
The route and direction of inspection isselected by compliance officer.
