Othello.
Othello is one of Williams Shakespeare´s famous tragedies, although it contains some drama too. Through this play we can appreciate the writing style of Mr. Shakespeare and the situation that they were living in Italy during those years.
In this course, we had the opportunity to read the play and to watch the movie, which I believe is an excellent adaptation, taking in considerationthe Shakespeare didn´t wrote much descriptions of the characters, nor the places. But maybe, this was good for the creator of the movie, because this gave them the opportunity to create the places and the characters as they made them up in their minds.
This doesn´t mean that the play and the movie are the same; they have many differences. But it´s not that the director hadn´t read the play; thiswas because, people doesn´t read, so they needed to explain visually the situation and because it´s Hollywood and they must make more drama of the story in order to make it interesting for the audience.
The first difference takes place when in the movie, we see Desdemona running in the darkness, and see while Roderigo and Iago are watching through a window, the wedding of her with Othello. In theplay, it only says that Desdemona and Othello had been married, but it doesn´t mentions Desdemona in the streets or the wedding itself.
Second, in the play only says that Othello is a moor, but it never describes him as it is showed in the movie. For example, he has a tattoo in his shaved head and he wears earrings. As for his cane, in the movie it has a sword in it, which he uses to injure Iago, but in the play this sword inside the cane is never mentioned.
Other thing that is not described in the play is the handkerchief that Othello gives to Desdemona; in the play the color and the printing is not described, and we can see in the movie a white handkerchief decorated with a lot of tiny strawberries on it.
Also, when they had dinner in Cyprus, Iago invites Cassio a beer or a drink witha couple of friends in the play; while in the movie, they are a lot of drunk guys with them.
Then, when Desdemona is being suffocated by Othello, he has an epilepsy attack that is not mentioned in the play. Other thing is that when he realizes that Desdemona has told him the truth, he cries her dead, and this is not mentioned in the play either.
At the end, in the play we can read that Othellohas a hidden sword, with the one he kills himself and in the movie we can see that the weapon with the one he kills himself is taken from Cassio when he is trying to get him up. Other thing we can see in this ending of the movie is Desdemona, Othello, Emilia and Iago dead in the same bed. In the play they died but it never mentions where, and Iago doesn´t die, he escapes.
In the play as in themovie, they are a lot of themes treated and this gives the story a kind of ethical or moral sense. In other words it can tells us, what should we do and what we shouldn´t. because like other works at the end the bad guy receives his punishment. However, here the good ones also died, but this is part of the tragedy.
For example, Jealousy is the main theme, and we can see it through the entire story.Principally from Iago, who first gets angry because Othello chooses Cassio over him, to be his right hand. But he is not only mad for this, he also hates Othello because even being a moor he is a respected soldier, a good man and is married with a fair woman (Desdemona).
Another theme that we can appreciate in the play is Revenge. Iago wants revenge against Othello for choosing Cassio and fornot giving him the place, he thinks he deserve. But also, Othello wants revenge against his lovely Desdemona who apparently betrayed him with his friend Cassio.
Racism is other theme which personally I hated the most because I don´t like this stuff about treating the people depending on their color or their social and economic status. Returning to the play; in it, the court doesn´t seems to care...
