AMERICA MOVIL

América Móvil offers wireless phone service from the Rio Grande to Tierra del Fuego. The company is Latin America's top mobile carrier with more than 200 million subscribers in 18 countries. In Mexico the company enjoys a 74% market share with almost 60 millionsubscribers to its Telcel brand. Telcel also has 260 retail stores. Its second largest market is Brazil, which serves almost 45 million subscribers through subsidiaries Claro and Americel. América Móvil is also the largest fixed-line operator in Central America and the Caribbean, with nearly 4 million lines in service. Majority owner Carlos Slim Helú combined América Móvil with his fixed-line businessesTelmex in 2010 as part of a broader restructuring effort.
América Móvil is also looking to enter Costa Rica to offer satellite television, wireless phone, and Internet service under its Claro brand. Currently, the only telecom provider in the country is the government-controlled Instituto Costarricsense de Electricidad (Grupo ICE).
In the US the company operates through subsidiary TracFone,which is a leading provider of pre-paid wireless services. TracFone products feature a pay-as-you-go, prepaid mobile phone with no annual contracts or activation fees. Its services account for about 5% of América Móvil's total revenue. The company also owns a 45% stake in Telvista, a call center company with locations in the US and Mexico.

CEMEX

Chairman: Lorenzo ZambranoThe building materials company is one of the top cement makers in the. The majority of its sales come from cement; the company has more than 60 cement plants and an annual production capacity of more than 95 million tons. It also produces, markets and distributes ready-mix concrete, aggregates, and clinker CEMEX operates in North America (through CEMEX Inc.), as well as in Africa, Asia, Europe,the Middle East, and South America. The US, Mexico, and Europe account for about 80% of revenues.
Before the global economic crisis hit, CEMEX was focused on growth by making diverse acquisitions around the world. One of its first major acquisitions came when it bought European cement giant RMC Group -- one of the world's largest cement makers and the largest supplier of ready-mix concrete --for some $5.75 billion in 2005. The RMC deal helped expand CEMEX's operations beyond Latin America and the US. The company also acquired Rinker, Australia's biggest building-material manufacturer for more than $14 billion -- a price tag that dwarfed the RMC transaction.

Future demand will likely be driven by government-funded infrastructure projects in the US and a recovering housing market. Assuch, CEMEX is buying Ready Mix USA's interest in the companies' two joint ventures, which have operations in the Southeast US. It also may be focusing more on emerging markets such as the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, which reported record sales for the company during the downturn.

CARSO GLOBAL TELECOM

Carso Global Telecom is atelecommunications holding company controlled by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helú, Latin America's richest entrepreneur. The company's investments include a 71% stake in Teléfonos de Mexico (Telmex), Mexico's #1 telecom service provider, in partnership with Texas-based AT&T Inc.. Carso Global Telecom was spun off from Slim's Grupo Carso conglomerate in 1996. Top Latin American mobile carrier América Móvilbought Carso Global Telecom for about $17.6 billion in mid-2010 as part of a larger $21 billion plan to consolidate Slim's telecom holdings in Latin America.
As part of the restructuring, América Móvil also acquired the minority stakes in Mexican fixed line leader Telmex and its regional counterpart Telmex Internacional not already owned by Helú. The deal was designed to bring the wired and...
