Canal Interoceánico Museum: Located in the Cathedral Plaza. From 1997 the museum is situated inside a very elegant French style building built in1875 as the Grand Hotel. The building is acquired by the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interoceanique for their offices in 1881. The Isthmian Canal Commission buys the building after the failure bythe French to build the Canal and utilizes it until 1910 when it passes to the Panamanian government.
This museum exhibits an important collection of objects related to the Inter oceanic route fromthe time of the colony, to the construction of the railroad and the gold fever, to the republican time and the construction of the Inter oceanic route. Open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.from Tuesday to Sunday. Price of admission: $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for kids. For more information call 211-1650.
Museo Antropológico Reina Torres de Araúz (Reina Torres de Araúz AnthropologicalMuseum): After decades of being on display in a former railway station, the government's collection of pre-Columbian artifacts is now housed in a spacious building just down the road from the ParqueNatural Metropolitano visitor center. The museum is named for Panama's pioneering anthropologist, Reina Torres de Araúz, who first opened this and a half-dozen other museums in the country, and itincludes a display on her life's work. The museum's main exhibits feature artifacts from various cultures dating back thousands of years. Its relatively small collection consists of stone statues, paintedceramics, and gold jewelry, including exquisite bells, and pendants in the shape of frogs, eagles, and other creatures.
