El cerebro sigue desarrollándose durante la adolescencia, y exposición a sustancias exógenas como la nicotina puede ejercer adaptaciones de larga duración durante este período vulnerable. Para comprender cómo la nicotina afecta al cerebro adolescente es importante entender el desarrollo normal del cerebroadolescente. Esta revisión resume datos humanos y animales en el desarrollo del cerebro, con énfasis en la corteza prefrontal, por su importante función en el órgano de fiscalización sobre el comportamiento. Además, discutimos cómo exposición de nicotina durante la adolescencia puede perturbar el desarrollo del cerebro teniendo consecuencias a largo plazo sobre la función cognitiva Ejecutiva en laedad adulta.
