Diego Armando Maradona is considered one of the most controversial and newsworthy sport figures in Argentina and allover the world for three remarkable reasons. To begin with, in the 1986 world cup, when he won the Golden Ball award as the tournament's best player, he was theprotagonist of two controversial goals. In the quarter-final round of that same tournament he scored two goals in a 2-1 victory over England that entered soccerhistory. The first one was an unpenalized handball known as the "Hand of God", and the second one was a spectacular 60-metre-weave through six English players,commonly referred to as "The Goal of the Century". Secondly, his drug addiction causes him several problems. He was suspended from football for 15 months in 1991 afterfailing a doping test for cocaine in Italy, and also he was sent home from the 1994 World Cup in the USA for using ephedrine. Then, after retiring from playingin 1997, he started to put on weight because of the continuing cocaine abuse. However, in 2005 a stomach stapling operation helped him to control his weight gain.Finally, His outspoken manners have sometimes put him at odds with journalists and sport executives. Everybody will remember his conference as coach of theArgentinian team after his classification in the quarter-final round of the world cup in Germany when he insult to a journalist telling him “la tenés adentro”. To sumup, although He is considered by many to be the greatest footballer of all time, he is also regarded as the most contentious figure in the history of football.
