Recently, the media has been talking about the construction of a wall along the border between the Unites States and Mexico (Roberts, 2006).Opponents to the construction of the wall describe it as a 21st century “Berlin Wall”; and claim that building physical barriers along America's Southern border would not stem illegal immigration andsolve any problem by itself. On the contrary, it will affect people from both countries. This idea is supported by the Mexican President Vicente Calderon, who said, “Humanity committed a grave error byconstructing the Berlin wall and I am sure that today the United States is committing a grave error in constructing a wall along our northern border” (2006). However, the United States is rushing tobuild 670 miles of rampart along the U.S.-Mexican border which is intended to secure and protect America’s frontier. Still, a wall would not stop illegal immigrants, drug-traffickers or terrorists, alsoit will negatively affect our relationship with Mexico and its elevated cost is a multi-billion waste.
Historically, the U.S-Mexican border has been in the eye of the hurricane due to manycontroversies. It is the line that divides not only two countries, but the Anglo-American world from the Hispanic-American (Karaim, 2008). Besides, it is also the path for many people searching for a betterlife as the opportunity for others to perform some illegal business such as contraband. For these reasons, many Americans think that a physical barrier like a wall is an effective first step insecuring the border, been motivated by the idea that a wall would provide a critical line of defense against illegal immigration and all other treats that afflicts their country (2008).
