DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK
Death Valley National Park is located in California and Nevada, east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
The park is located in an arid area and contains one of the largestdesert area reliefs in the continental United States. The lowest point of Death Valley, known as Badwater, is 85.5 m below sea level, while Mount Whitney, located about 50 km away, has an altitude ofover 4,400 meters.
The heart of the park, called Death Valley National Monument was created in 1933.
The central part of the park, a small area known as the "Devil's Hole," is located in easternNevada near the Ash Meadows Nature Reserve.
The park consists of two major valleys: Death Valley and Panamint. Both were formed during the last million years. It is separated from the Pacific Ocean byfive mountain ranges that dry humid air from the ocean. Death Valley is one of the hottest places in North America.
The vegetation is varied, graded and has adapted to dry terrain. There are shrubssuch as Larrea tridentata or Prosopis glandulosa in the valley and in the highlands there are pines and Joshua trees. There are about 1,000 different species of plants.(plantas en el power point)
Thefauna is also varied: you can find 51 species of native mammals, 307 species of birds, and 36 species of reptiles.
Places of interest
Artist's Palette is located in the foothills of the BlackMountains and is noted for the diversity of color of its rocks. This color variation is derived from the oxidation of the metals: red and yellow salts come from iron, the green of the decomposition of themica, and the purple manganese.
Badwater is a saline soil area in which there is the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere about 86 meters below sea level. These salt flats formed when lakes dried uparound 2000-3000 years ago. The earth has a white coloration caused by the salt crystals.
