Orchestra: woodwind 4.4.5.4 (with doublings of 4 piccolos, 2 eng hn, bass cl, 2 E flat cl, 2 cntrbsn) –
brass 10.10.4.1 – 2 harps, organ – strings 2.2.2.2 (with divisi), 5percussionists (including 2 timpanists)
playing 7 timps, 2 bass drums, 2 pairs of cymbals, 2 triangles, 2 tamtams (high, low), glockenspiel, 3 bells,
birch, side drum.
Duration: 85’ (The chorus participates in only the last 15 minutes of the work.)
Editor’s notes: This choral score has been transcribed from the Josef Weinberger full score (1897) with
the chorus parts in modern clefs and theorchestral accompaniment arranged for single pianoforte, four
hands. This was a conscious decision on my part to provide a more sonorous alternative to the usual
accompaniment for a single player, and one which contains the full extent of Mahler’s contrapuntalism.
The fanfares of the “great call” (der grosse Appell) which immediately precede the first choral entry are
given in full score; the precedingmovements and initial 446 bars of the fifth movement are omitted.
