Paul Rand is notably one of the most prominent graphic designers of the 20th century. His legacy is easily remembered through his numerous designs; the logos he designedfor corporations such as Ford, IBM, UPS, and ABC. His style was simplistic, yet intrinsic to graphic design’s development. Even after Rand’s death in 1996, he is still one of the most well knowngraphic designers today.

Rand was born, Peretz Rosenbaum, in 1914, in Brooklyn, New York.
Rand was educated at the Pratt Institute from 1929 to 1932, the Parsons School of Design from 1932 to1933, and the Art Students League from 1933 to 1934 (Lewandowski, 2007).

He is a prime example of someone who worked his way up to success. His career began when he worked part-time creatingstock images, which was supplied to newspapers and magazines. While working and attending class he decided to abbreviate and change his name to Paul Rand. A friend of Rand’s, Morris Wyszogrodexplains, “He figured that ‘Paul Rand,’ four letters here, four letters there, would create a nice symbol. So he became Paul Rand” (Lewandowski, 2007). This is just one of the many examples of how Randthinks. He wanted to create a “logo” for himself, a persona, so he branded his own name by giving himself a new title.
When researching or reading about Paul Rand, it is easy to see that his most wellknown contributions to the design world are his logo identities for many prominent companies, many of which are still in use. Paul Rand had a real gift for understand companies and their identity,which he then transcribed into a logo. Mark Favermann explains about Rand’s IBM logo that it “was not just an identity but a basic design philosophy that permeated corporate consciousness and publicawareness” (Lewandowski, 2007). He began with the logo in 1956, then modified it in 1960, and then incorporated the striped logo in 1972 (Lewandowski, 2007).
