ORGANIZED NOISE
Do you like music? Probably.
But do you like every kind of music-hit hop, classical, country & western and rock? You probably don’t. Why? To answer this question, you have toask another question: what is music?
A music teacher wanted to explain to his students the difference between music and noise. He brought a set of different sized blocks of wood to class. The studentswere astonished to see him throw the blocks randomly at the wall. Everyone agreed it was noise. He then took the same blocks and again threw them at wall. This time, however, he threw them in aspecial order. The students quickly recognized the children´s tune Mary had a little lamb. “So”, the teacher asked them. “What is music?” the answer is that it´s organized noise.
American composerJohn Cage (1912-1992) wrote, “Wherever we are what we hear is mostly noise. When we ignore it, it disturbs us. When we listen to it, we find it fascinating. The sound of a truck at fifty mph. Staticbetween the stations. Rain. We want to capture and control these sounds, to use them, not as sound effects, but as musical instruments.”
Cage´s most famous piece of music, influenced by his study ofBuddhism, is called 4´33”. It consists of someone sitting at a piano and playing nothing for four minutes and thirty-three seconds. The idea sounds inane but, actually, when you are there listening to it,you end up paying attention to all the small sounds around you. This is what Cage intended.
Music from other countries and different times often sounds strange to us. We are not used to itsorganization. But if we just take time to listen, we might enjoy it.
