1897 Auguste Perret terminates his career at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and begins work for his father’s contracting firm 1890 and onwards makes interesting designsthat set the stage for his career two examples form the period: Casino, St Malo (1899) in ‘national-romantic’ style and Avenue Wagram apartment building, Paris (1902) with which he goes back to theClassical tradition, anticipating by a few years Behrens, Hoffmann and Olbrich’s transformation of the Secession Style

Perret’s take on reinforced concrete initially more in tune with the Gothic notion of rib-work and infill than ClassicalCompositionally, it compresses the format of Avenue Wagram Street facade in 5 bays U-form for pragmatic reasons: more floor area if the court is in the front Rear wall of the building: glass brick
• • •After 1903 Perret regards the structural frame as the essential expression of the built form Rue Franklin is tiled so as to suggest the structure (as if it were post and lintel in wood construction)Sunflowers in ceramic reminiscent of late Art Nouveau, while the frame anticipates Le Corbusier’s free plan.
