The history of pharmacy as anindependent science is relatively young. The origins of historiography pharmaceutical back to the first third of the nineteenth century which is when the first historiographies that while not touching allaspects of pharmaceutical history are the starting point for the final start of this science.
Until the birth of pharmacy as an independent science, there is a historical evolution from antiquity to thepresent day that marks the course of this science, always connected to the medicine.
Pharmacy is the health profession that links the health sciences with the chemical sciences and it is charged withensuring the safe and effective use of pharmaceutical drugs. The scope of pharmacy practice includes more traditional roles such as compounding and dispensing medications, and it also includes moremodern services related to health care and providing drug information.
The word pharmacy is derived from its root word pharma which was a term used since the 15th–17th centuries. In addition to pharmaresponsibilities, the pharma offered general medical advice and a range of services that are now performed solely by other specialist practitioners, such as surgery and midwifery.
