Phoebe Vs. The Lunatic

Phoebe vs. the lunatic
The type of conflict is man vs. man. In Phoebe’s case it is her vs. the lunatic. The page where we really meet the lunatic and Phoebe’s fear for him beginson page 43, chapter 8. The conflict starts with Phoebe’s personality. She is melodramatic, fearful, likes to make up stories, imaginative and thinks a lot about murders, killers,lunatics, etc. This leads to the event when Phoebe and Sal are at Phoebe’s house and a man knocks the door and Phoebe opens it. When she looks at him she thinks he is a lunatic andcloses the door and turns to Sal saying “His jeans are really tight. Maybe he has a knife tucked into his socks” (p.43). This is partially caused to the phobia of Phoebe to newunknown people. When her mother leaves she immediately thinks the lunatic kidnapped her and she is looking for clues. This problem involves Phoebe, the lunatic and Phoebe’s mom, Mrs.Winterbottom. The characters are impacted by this problem because they all react but in different ways. Phoebe hates the lunatic but still has fear for him. The supposed lunaticis just confused and Mrs. Winterbottom didn’t react either ways. The characters didn’t actually learn anything because the problem hasn’t been solved yet, because now Phoebe’smother is gone we don’t know anything about the lunatic so far. This changes the readers perspective because you may thing if the lunatic who’s Phoebes’ creation, is real and maybe hassomething to do with the Winterbottoms. Also it gives you another perspective of Phoebe’s story and makes you want to read more. The author is trying to tell us that Phoebe is areally creative girl that is a little crazy and creates things in her mind that seem real, but they are really not. We should keep interest because Phoebe may surprise us on day.
