Lord Alfred Tennyson
(Somersby, Reino Unido, 1809-Aldworth, id., 1892) Poeta británico. Creció en el seno de una familia acomodada que le inculcó el gusto por la lectura, y ya desde joven manifestó sus aptitudes poéticas en unas primeras composiciones a la manera de Pope y Milton. A los diecinueve años publicó su primer libro de poemas en colaboración con su hermano Charles, Poemas de doshermanos (1823), y al año siguiente ingresó en el Trinity College de Cambridge, donde entró en contacto con una sociedad secreta de gran prestigio, The Apostles, y conoció al que sería su gran amigo, Arthur Hallan, a la memoria del cual escribió uno de sus poemas más famosos, In memoriam (1850), considerado su obra maestra.

Su primer libro importante, Poemas principalmente líricos, apareció en 1830 ytres años más tarde publicó el segundo, Poemas, que no recibió una acogida tan buena por parte de la crítica, a pesar de tratarse de una colección más consistente y lograda, con un mayor dominio de la técnica y de la construcción mitológica, clásica y medieval, y que da pie a la reflexión moral.

Abatido por este fracaso y por la muerte, ese mismo año, de su amigo Hallan, Tennyson estuvo diezaños sin publicar, hasta que en 1942 apareció su tercer libro de Poemas, con el que recobró cierto prestigio literario, hecho que lo animó a publicar, en 1847, un largo poema sobre la condición de la mujer moderna, La princesa, con el que se consagró como poeta.

Tres años más tarde apareció el ya citado In memoriam, tras el cual fue nombrado poeta oficial, con lo que ocupó el sitio que habíadejado vacante Wordsworth. Como tal, escribió la Oda por la muerte del duque de Wellington (1852) y La carga de la brigada ligera, con el objetivo de cantar las glorias nacionales. Respaldado por esta posición oficial, a la que vendría a añadirse, en 1884, el título de lord, trabajó en la composición de una serie de poemas en prosa sobre el rey Arturo, que culminaría en 1859 con Los idilios del rey.A partir del año 1875, Tennyson pasó a escribir teatro (Becket, 1884; Tiresias, 1885), aunque sólo algunas de sus obras fueron representadas. La muerte le sorprendió cuando aún estaba corrigiendo su último libro de poemas, La muerte de Enone (1892).
