The History and Spelling of English
The history of The English language has always been a passion of mine, that´s why I really enjoyed this module. Once you study and get relevant knowledge aboutthe history of English you can explain issues and discuss with your students in a better way. Something that caught my attention when I was in College were the French words that are written in the sameway in English but they have a small difference in pronunciation like: Village, Voyage and I´ve tried to keep looking for words like that. I was giving a conversational class to a couple Spanishshareholders who were really aware of the French influence in English and we could have a great exchange of ideas to better understand why English is pronounced this way. They taught me that the Frenchinfluence helped English to better distinguish some phonetics patterns, for example the unvoiced fricative sounds [f], [s], [θ] (as in thin), and [∫] (shin) didn’t have a clear counterpart and Frenchinfluenced English with their voiced counterparts [v], [z], [ð] (the), and [ʒ] (mirage), and also contributed the diphthong [ɔy] (boy), after that interesting conversation, I always try to put emphasison that particular issue so students know that village and voyage must be pronounced (ˈvɪlɪʤ) and (ˈvɔɪɪʤ).

On the other hand students from Spain will assimilate grammar and lexis but they will have a hard time dealing with cognates, indeed homonyms (words who are spell the samebut have a different meaning) will represent a great deal of confusion like: see and sea or ant and aunt. Students who come from Japan, Korea and Arabic are more likely to have good lexis and grammar...
