The tectonic plates

A tectonic plate or lithospheric plate is a piece of lithosphere that moves as a rigid block without internal deformation present on the Earth's asthenosphere.

Plate tectonics is the theory that explains the structure and dynamics of Earth's surface. States that the lithosphere the upper colder and rigid Earth) is fragmented into a series of plates that move over themantle. This theory also describes the plate motion, their addresses and interactions. Earth's lithosphere is divided into large plates and smaller plates or microplates. At the edges of the plates is concentrated seismic activity, volcanic and tectonic. This results in the formation of large channels and basins.

The Earth is the only planet in the Solar System with active tectonic plates, although there is evidence that Mars, Venus and some of the Galilean satellites such as Europe, was tectonically active in ancient times.

Discovery .-
Although the theory of plate tectonics was formally established in 1960 and in 1970, actually this is the product of more than two centuries of geological and geophysical observations. For example, in the nineteenth century it was observed thatthere were numerous sedimentary basins in the Earth's past, stratigraphic thicknesses of up to ten times those observed in the interior of continents, and these were subsequently deformed by unknown processes causing mountain ranges. These basins were named geosynclinal and orogenic deformation process. Another finding of the nineteenth century was the documentation of a mountain or "dorsal" in themiddle of the Atlantic Ocean that later observations showed that forming a continuous network extending throughout the oceans.

A significant advance in the problem of the formation of geosynclinal and orogenies occurred between 1908 and 1912 when Alfred Wegener proposed that the masses were in motion and that they had broken a supercontinent called Pangea. The movement of continental massesdeformed geosynclinal sediments accumulated at the edges raising new mountain ranges. Wegener believed that the continents drifted on the surface of the crust under the oceans as a block of wood on a table and that this was due to tidal forces product derived from the poles. However, it was soon shown that these forces are about one ten-millionth of a hundredth of a millionth of the force of gravity, making it impossible that they could fold and lift the masses of mountain ranges.

Types of plates .-
Lithospheric plates are essentially of two types, depending on the kind of crust that forms its surface. There are two kinds of bark. the oceanic and continental.

Oceanic plates. Plates are covered entirely by oceanic crust, thin and basic composition. Appear immersed in its entirety, except for the presence of intraplate volcanoes, of which displayed higher emerged, island arcs or any of its edges. The most notable examples are in the Pacific: the Pacific Plate, the Nazca plate, Cocos plate and Philippine plate.
Mixed plates. Plates are partially covered by continental crust and partly by oceanic crust. Most boards have this character. For a continental plate would be entirelylacking divergent edge types (dorsal) in outline. In theory this is possible in phases of convergence and collision of continental fragments, and in fact can be interpreted and subplates some of which form the continents. Valen as examples of mixed plates South American plate or the Eurasian plate.
